What did you say?

In this lesson you will also learn the phrases needed when you don't understand what was just said. First, there two words that are used interchangeably that have similar meanings:

พูดว่า
(pôot-wâa)
spoke; said

You should recall from your earlier study of Thai that พูด (pôot) is the verb to speak.
พูดว่า is like spoke. In the phrases we'll study next it's used as I said; he said.

บอกว่า
(bàwk-wâa)
told; said

บอก (bàwk) is the verb to tell. บอกว่า is like told. In the phrases we'll study next it's also used as I said; he said. In basic conversations like this, either phrase can be used.

เขาพูดว่าอะไร
(kǎo pôot-wâa à-rai)
What did (he or she) say?
คุณบอกว่าอะไร
(kune bàwk-wâa à-rai)
What did you say?
